You could sell Software from your Internet store. This could be:
- Software that you've written yourself. Obviously, you'd need both a good idea and the necessary programming
skills to create the software.
- Software that you've worked with a programmer to create. In this case, what you need is the idea and to prepare a document describing what the document should do ("a specification") which the programmer can work from.
Be aware, that developing software this way, while possible, does require some management skills, especially to
ensure the programmer develops what you wanted him to develop and doesn't misunderstand you requirements.
You may find sites such as
Software Secrets - Exposed!
and
Software Requirements Unleashed
helpful.
When
working with a programmer, you also should make establish at the start in writing (consult an attorney if you need help), a written agreement which specifies who owns what, payment terms, your requirements, and so on.
If you know a good local programmer, you may find it easier to work with him, as that way you can
hopefully arrange to review the software as it is being developed, and talk face-to-face. If you don't,
you can find programmers to work with at sites like the
Elance Marketplace.
- You can purchase "resell rights" software. This is software that you are allowed to resell.
Obviously the quality of this type of software does vary greatly, and in some cases the market may already
be saturated with too many competitors.
- You may be able to find software with great potential but that the owners are neglecting. In this case,
you could approach them to try to make a deal to purchase their copyright and/or to purchase a right to
resell it.
- Some software is released by its authors
under a license which allows you to distribute (subject to terms and conditions),
for example, software released under the
GNU General Public License such
as the
Linux operating system.
It is possible to build a business around such software. For example, NASDAQ listed company
RedHat, Inc. generates most of its
revenue from GPL software.
Smaller businesses can also profit from GPL software: For example, if you were to read
Jim Wilson's eBay Secrets, you'd discover that Jim has sold CDs of such software on eBay.
Finally, I'll just note there are a number of
companies which specialize in helping you sell your software
(usually software that you own the rights to, and/or shareware software which allows users to try before
they buy). While you don't have to use one of these companies, they can be helpful, for example, by handling
burning CDs of your software and shipping them to customers.
