What To Sell

So, what can you sell from your online store?

If you already have a bricks-and-mortar store, it's easy... start by selling what you already do, but online. The advantage is that you know the business, and thus are more likely to made a success of it.

But what if you don't have something to sell?

Well the first decision that you should make is whether you really want to sell things yourself. It is possible to get started in online business without selling things yourself: by participating in affiliate programs for companies that do sell their products online, and earning commission on those sales.

Assuming you do want to sell things online, what could you sell?

Here are a few ideas to get you started:
(follow the respective link for more detailed information in each idea)
  • Crafts
You could sell your crafts online, assuming of course, that you're good at crafting.

  • Drop Shipping
In this type of business, you take orders from your customers, but then you order from a drop shipping company who then delivers the product to your customer. This approach allows you to offer products without having to deal with the hassle of shipping or having to store a large inventory of stuff to sell.

  • eBooks
You could sell eBooks online. (eBooks are "electronic books" that can be read on a computer). You can write these eBooks yourself with the right software, or you can purchase "resell rights" to others' eBooks, and sell those.

  • Membership Sites
Membership sites are web sites which people pay to become a member of. They might pay to get access to exclusive content, to downloads, to participate in a community, etc...

  • Software
You could sell software on the Internet. This could be:

    • Software that you've developed yourself (if you have some programming skills).
    • Software that you've worked with a programmer to create (perhaps a good choice, if you don't have programming skills but you do have a great idea).
    • Software that you've purchased "resell rights" to.
    • Software that the license agreement allows you to distribute, for example software released under the GNU GPL license.

  • Web Hosting
Web hosts store the web pages that make up their customers' web sites on specially configured computers, and usually charge a monthly or yearly fee for this service. Even if you don't have your own web hosting infrastructure (and I'm betting most people don't!), it is possible to resell web hosting services provided by other companies, to your customers, under your name.
